Lures sketch

"Lures"

Because not all lures are for fishes.

Acrylic sketch from my Celtic sketchbook

Both Celtic and generally Folklore is full of really dark depictions of different spirits, creatures and beings that pray on humans - both on their life force and literally. Especially folklore concerning sea beings.
Mer-beings are quite different in folklore from what we can see today. Although there are stories of benevolent and helpful beings, most of them were often described as dangerous, deadly and unlucky for humans.

When I paint folkloric-inspired art, I always compare different folkloric materials and gather as much informations for my painted subjects.
When I channel, I combine these fokloric elements with what I draw from the other and sometimes "Other" sends me direct symbols, sometimes they are very abstract.
Sometimes they come in a form of different lights and colors, sounds and feelings, and sometimes they also take shapes.

For my artistic representation of mer-beings, I`m always somehow drawn to eels, serpents and deep-sea creatures that have dangerous but still alluring elements. They are both beautiful, intriguing and deadly, just like the energy of the Deep Blue World and the Other.
