In Celtic Fairy folklore, many water sources were places of immense power, and known as otherworldly points where otherworldly beings, lake ladies, fairies, spirits and gods appeared or dwelled. These places embodied powers that were both dark and light, both baneful and benevolent. These liminal places were used to heal, grant wishes, foretell fortune and leave offerings for the Liminal Powers and also acted as portals to the Otherworld.
Lake ladies were sometimes seen appearing in such watery places, especially during liminal times, such as dawn and dusk, during full moon nights or at high dates. It was also believed that specific flowers had special powers that could bring healing, good fortune, protection or remove Fairy afflictions.
For these, and many other reasons, such liminal watery places were deemed sacred.
